Kaku Kayak launched at Outdoor Retailer last year, with a handful of boats. Those are gone. This year, the Florida-based company is skipping Salt Lake City in order to concentrate on launching several new designs, one of which, the Wahoo, started landing at dealers in May.
“The Wahoo is for anglers who have a Champagne taste on a beer budget,” Kaku Kayak owner Kevin Hawkins said. He described the Wahoo as the next step up from entry level, a great mid-range kayak that performs well inshore.
$899 buys a kayak with latching front hatch, a rigid center console hatch cover, a tall back seat, and dual flushmount rod holders. The ruddered version is only $100 more.
“We’re trying to make the best boats we can for under $1,000. A 13-foot model is coming soon,” Hawkins said.
