Kings Dominate Extreme Summer Slam
Attendance record falls – 117 kayaks launched to fish offshore
By Paul Lebowitz
Florida’s offshore scene continues to grow. The Extreme Kayak Fishing Summer Slam I contested off Pompano Beach in late June pulled in another record crowd: 117 kayak anglers.
“There was something spectacular about looking out to the clear-skied sunrise to see that many ‘yaks headed out into the Atlantic,” Sid Dobrim told Extreme’s Maria Hector.
The Extreme crew once again turned the day into a celebration and party for watermen and women of all kinds. Stand-up paddleboard racers hit the beach right after the fishing kayak shotgun start. Later, there were sand sculpting competitions and live reggae music. There was free beer for all and champagne showers for the winners.
Matt Eckert, man of the 11 hour marlin ride, impressed again by bringing the series’ largest ever blackfin tuna (22.2 pounds) back to the beach. Otherwise it was nearly all kings. Michael Wood caught two for 26.4 pounds to take the day.
“Wood fishes boat tournaments. We are now getting more and more boats guys fishing in kayaks,” Extreme tournament series owner Joe Hector said, highlighting the series’ mainstream acceptance and lucrative prize kitty.
