Team USA’s Matthew Scotch leads with 56 total inches of fish after day one of three days of competition in Hobie Fishing World Championship 6 action out of Leeville, Louisiana. Scotch, who qualified via the Hobie Bass Open, tallied a 38-inch redfish and an 18-inch seatrout in windy conditions that ended with 7 members of Team USA in the top ten of the leaderboard.

A quick hit on a pocket of biting fish made the day for Scotch.

“We were fighting some really tough conditions today. It affected a lot of guys’ strategy. I got my fish really early. I caught them on the same bait, about three minutes apart. We’ll see what happens in the next couple of days but I’m pretty happy with my day one result,“ Scotch said.

Team Australia has two of the top five spots, as Australia’s Guy Struthers proved himself a quick study. He trails by just one inch after catching the biggest bull of the day, a 40 incher. A 15-inch trout was enough to set him firmly in second place with 55 total inches.

2014 Hobie Fishing World Champion Steve Lessard is making a strong bid to become the first repeat champion. He sits in third on the strength of a 33-inch redfish and 15-inch speck for a total of 48 inches.

Defending champion Xiaohong Ma of China is currently in 29th place with 16 total inches. So far no one has caught a flounder, only trout and redfish.

Fishing resumed Friday, with a delayed start due to inclement weather.

Hobie Fishing Worlds 6 is proudly supported by Rhino-Rack, Lowrance, Power-Pole, Yak-Attack, Daiwa, Ram Mounts, Lurefans, Hobie Polarized and AFTCO.
