Wilderness Systems has leaked further details on their as yet unnamed offshore fishing kayak. This one will carry the freight – and plenty of angling accessories.

“We wanted a boat that was going to accommodate the needs for an offshore fisherman. There are so many different products out there that they are using to enhance their fishing experience and help them catch fish… We wanted to be able to accommodate those needs whether it was for fishfinders, rod holders, fish bags, coolers, all the way to live wells,” Wilderness Systems product manager Shane Steffen said.

The new boat doesn’t look anything like the company’s original offshore performer, the sleek, stretched-out and low-slung Tarpon, introduced in 2001. That boat was quick, but never had the volume or deck space to pack on the gear. By its second generation, the Tarpon shed one of its best features, a gigantic bow hatch. That looks to make a comeback with the 2014 offshore model.

Although it isn’t expected to launch until summer 2014, members of Wildy’s fishing team have already slimed it. The company’s teaser video has a few brief clips of prototype in action. It’s gone back to CAD work for further tweaking. So far, the seat appears to be Wildy’s standard Phase 3 AirPro System. It sits low in the boat, as expected for an offshore platform.
