Incredible. A year after winning ICAST 2013’s Best Boat award for the Predator, Old Town not only repeated, their new Predator XL won the whole dang show at ICAST 2014.

The award is another signal that kayak fishing is firmly in the angling mainstream. A fishing kayak beat out the traditional award winners: glitzy new reels, cool new baits and gee whiz electronics. You couldn’t walk around the show floor, the biggest ICAST ever, without bumping into a kayak.

When Old Town’s David Hadden was called to the stage to accept the trophy plaque for best boat, his great night was only beginning. He said he was told to stick around ostensibly to pick up another award. The prospect was electrifying.

“My hands were shaking,” David Hadden of Old Town said later as he posed for photos with the plaques.

A fishing kayak has won the overall Best of Show award only twice previously, for the original Pro Angler in 2009 and its cousin the Pro Angler 12 in 2012.

Other notable ICAST 2014 Best of Show honorees:

Freshwater Rod: Duckett Fishing Micro Magic Pro
Saltwater Rod: Shimano Terez Stand Up
Freshwater Reel: Abu Garcia Revo Beast
Saltwater Reel: Penn Battle II
Soft Lure: Savage Gear 3D PVC Crab
Electronics: Humminbird Onix 8SI
